Transgender Employment Links
The following web sites contain information about transitioning
on the job and other issues transsexual and transgendered workers
and their employers may face. Some present the transsexual worker's
point of view, others offer advice from professionals. Several
pages of legal resources, from both the United States and Europe,
are listed. Also included are sites that provide mail order service
for relevant books.
- Transgender at Work.
A comprehensive site on transgender issues in the workplace.
Includes information on health insurance, restroom access, nondiscrimination
policies, employee resource groups, legal protections, and more,
plus links to related sites.
- GAYWORK.com. This is
a new employment service for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered
workers. Employers and recruiters can post job openings, and
job seekers can post resumes. The databases of both can be searched.
Employers pay a small fee. Because this service is very new,
there are not a lot of postings yet, but it could become a valuable
resource for transgendered workers and for employers seeking
extraordinary talent.
- Lucent Technologies
Protects Transgendered Employees. Lucent Technology's policy
statement prohibiting discrimination against transgendered and
intersex workers.
- Transgenderism
and Transition in the Workplace. An article written for HRC
(Human Rights Campaign) by Dana Priesing, Esq. This article provides
an excellent outline of things to consider when deciding whether
to transition at work, including legal, employment and personal
factors; lists the steps to take once you have decided to transition
on your job; and gives a good overview of legal issues.
- Transitions That Work. Consulting
services and diversity training for employers who have transitioning
workers. See also the related Center

- [trans]Gender
Education Materials. Materials used in "Gender: Exploring
Diversity and Acceptance," a diversity training workshop
used at Michigan State University, can be accessed from this

- Transsexuals
in the Work Place--A Guide For Employers. A short article
answering a few questions employers might have. Written by Barbara
Chambers/Copeland, reproduced from Gender Expressions Magazine.
- Transitioning
in the Professional Workplace: One Woman's Experience. An
account of the step-by-step transition of a male-to-female physician,
by Anne Lawrence, MD. Also see About
My Transition, a letter from Dr. Lawrence to her employer
explaining in detail what would be involved in her transition
in the workplace.
- Transition
in the Workplace. A first-person account of male-to-female
transition in the corporate world, by Diane Wilson.
- Coming Out
Letters. A page of links to letters written by transitioning
persons to their management, coworkers, friends and family. Included
are letters to coworkers from Australian college employee Katherine
Cummings, lawyer Robin
Diane Goldstein, and college professor Jacob
Hale, and a letter from management to the coworkers of
transsexual engineer Michelle
Steiner.
- Gender Transition
in the Workplace: Advice for the Transitioning Employee.
Psychotherapist Anne Vitale, PhD, offers advice to transsexuals
contemplating transitioning on the job.
- The
International Journal of Transgenderism. Abstract of "Gender
Transition in the Workplace," a presentation given at the
XV Harry Benjamin International Gender Dysphoria Association
Symposium, Vancouver, September 1997.
- Transgender
Nondiscrimination Statutes. A list of cities and states that
have enacted nondiscrimination laws that protect transsexuals,
plus lots of other legal information.
- GenderPac: Employment
Discrimination. Political efforts to end discrimination against
transgendered workers.
- Employment
Discrimination and the Transsexual. A 1996 paper written
by (then) law student JoAnna McNamara covering federal equal
protection laws and state and federal disability statutes as
they apply to transsexual workers.
- Legal
Aspects of Transsexualism. Sr. Mary Elizabeth's in-depth
examination of legal aspects of transsexualism. Includes sections
covering employment practices and law in both the military and
civilian arenas.
- The National Center for Lesbian Rights Transgender Law Project has made available several relevant articles: Gender, Identity, and New Developments in Employment Law, which is a series of shorter articles on subjects ranging from restrooms to transgendered teachers, Gender Identity Discrimination and Employment Law, which focuses on employees in California but has helpful information for others in the United States, and Employment Discrimination and the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, a Q&A about California state law. And especially for lawyers: Representing
Transsexual Clients: Selected
Legal Issues, which includes a section on employment law, and Federal Cases Recognizing That Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Non-Conformity and/or Transgender Status Is a form of Discrimination on the Basis of Sex, and Cases Recognizing Protection for Transgender People under State Sex and Disability Discrimination Provisions, which list federal and state cases that may be helpful in discrimination situations.
- Transgender Law Conference.
The International Conference of Transgender Law and Employment
Policy posts relevant news items and makes available the proceedings
of its annual conferences.
- Legal Articles
and Documents for Transgendered People. This transgender
legal page includes news, legal documents, speeches and articles
from around the world, plus links to other sources of legal information.
- The
National Journal of Sexual Orientation Law. The October 1997
issue, "Transgender Issues and Sexual Orientation"
examines the intersection of these topics, including employment
discrimination.
- What's
Hot--Transsexuals Test Limits of N.J. Law Against Sexual Bias.
A 1996 news article in New Jersey Law Journal about cases filed
by two transsexual women against their employers on issues of
discrimination.
- The ECJ
Judgement. The full text of the ruling of
the European Court of Justice declaring it to be against European
law to discriminate against transsexuals in employment. See also
the article by Stephen Whittle reviewing the implications of this decision.
- AEGIS
On-Line Library. A list of resources related to transgender
employment, including journal articles, books, and legal cases,

- Transsexual Workers: An Employer's
Guide and Working with a Transsexual:
A Guide for Coworkers by Janis Walworth. The most recent
and most comprehensive guides -- one for employers and one for
coworkers -- to help those who have transitioning or other transgendered
workers in their workplace can be ordered online or by mail.
- The Employer's Guide to Gender Transition by Dianna Cicotello (also known as Dana Cole), who has
been doing employment coaching and employer education and mediation
for transgender workers for over 15 years, is for sale.
- Creative Design
Services. Publications about transsexualism are can be ordered,
including "Medical, Legal & Workplace Issues for the Transsexual"
by Kirk & Rothblatt, "The Transsexual's Survival Guide II--Family,
Friends, & Employers" by Stringer, and "True Selves--Understanding
Transsexualism" by Brown & Rounsley. All have sections relating
to employment.
- Ingersoll Gender
